The director, Tsui Hark talks about Anita Mui

(Tsui Hark is the director of the film, "A better Tomorrow III"  of 1989.  Anita Mui played the leading female leading role for that film, and also sang the theme song.  Tsui Hark talked about Anita Mui when he was a guest at the interview program "Women in this world")

Interviewer:  At time, when you worked with Anita Mui, was it very smooth?  It was said that her temper was worse than yours.  She never talked to anyone in the morning, didn't she?

Tsui:  That time she was okay.  But after she got drunk, her temper was particularly difficult to control.  I tried to play a guessing game of fingers with her.  Her guessing game was like this: - if she won, she would slap you on the cheek; if you won, you would slap her on the cheek.  But you could not slap her.

Interviewer:  Exactly.  Man could not slap a woman.

Tsui:  When I won, I could not slap her on the cheek.  When she won, she slapped me on the cheek.  I wanted to stop playing with her.  It was so special.  We played a few tens rounds, and then stopped playing.  But when she was acting

Interviewer:  She was a person with inspiration ( divine spirit), was it correct?  After you talked about the script just once, she could understand already.

Tsui:  We often said that in the camera, she could show you something that could charm you.  Just like her dancing, the same dance on the stage, other people danced, she danced, but we always felt Anita Mui always danced not the same as others.  In the camera, the special shot of her was always different from the special shot of others.  Later on, she acted for comedy, I always felt strange about it.

Interviewer:  correct.  I don't like her playing comedy.

Tsui:  I told her not to shoot for comedy.  If she wanted to play in comedy, she should play in my comedy, don't play for others' comedy.

Interviewer:  Some selfishness.  Later when she got sick and passed away, actually she appeared to be very tough.  Therefore she finally chose to leave in that way.  Do you feel that you could understand it?

Tsui:  Because she held the last concert?  At that time she was already physically very weak.

Interviewer:  Yes.

Tsui:  At that time I was wondering if she wanted to faint on the stage.  I was not too sure what was going on.  I went to watch the concert, I was in the auditorium among audience.  The auditorium was completely brightly lit.  In normal concerts, the auditorium was in dark.  In her concert, the auditorium was brightly lid.  Just like her, particularly bright.  She wanted to see her audience and sang.  At that time, I was very touched.  After the concert, the whole group went to back stage .  I didn't go.  But I asked a friend to send me the pictures of that night.  I wished to have those pictures as a souvenir, just the things of that night

Interviewer:  Why you didn't go to back stage to see her?

Tsui:  I felt that she was very tired.  After performance, still a large group around her,   She was nice to everyone, she had to entertain everyone.  I felt it's not necessary for her to do that.  I didn't go.  Then I never got to see her again.

Interviewer:  At that time, did you have very strong premonition that it was her last performance?

Tsui:  Should be, because she put on the wedding gown, at the last scene she put on the wedding gown, and she performed the song "Sunset Melody, that was the film we worked together, I just felt it was too dramatic.

Interviewer:  This was her way of saying farewell.

Tsui:  Exactly. For her whole life, it seemed she needed love (romantic love), needed to be with someone, but she never had.  Then it's on the stage, she held her wedding ceremony on the stage.  When I watched it, I felt

Interviewer:  Sad

Tsui:  Anita Mui, you are still so persistent about this.
